The dark glass of life

The assignment is based on a bible verse, 1 Corinthians 13:12 which in Phil's version says:
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face

I set out to find the dark glass with another night of meetings ahead of me. Nothing I saw was catching my eye. Suddenly I realized I was holding a dark glass, the lens of the camera! If you know that chapter of Corinthains, it is the Love chapter. Love is patience, Love is kind, etc. You usually hear it at weddings and such. Then suddenly, Paul goes into this whole other realm of the "dark glass" if you will. He starts talking about putting away childish things and growing up and how we only know a small piece of what the bigger picture is. People believe different things about why he does this. Myself, I think he is talking about how we perceive things. Especially love. We have a conception about what love is, how it will arrive in our lives, and what it represents. Paul is telling us that our conceptions are like cloudy mirrors as humans. On earth, I believe we know and experience only a tiny facet of what love is. It is only when we die and return to God that things become clear, the glass is no longer obscured by the things of this world, the hatred, the pain, and the despair. For a Christian, that is when all the unanswered questions become answered and when our humanity no longer gets in the way of the truth. I know many people believe many things about death and religion and debates have gone on since the beginning of time. The second part of the verse says, "Now I know in part; but then shall I know even as I am also known". Imagine! With all of great love we have experienced in our families and relationships...there is still a more powerful, indescribable love to come! Whatever you believe, I hope you enjoy this picture (enlarge for filter effect).

Terrific explanation and interpretation of the assignment. I feel silly having shot a dark glass just because those words were in the verse! Here you put such thought into it, and the result is a meaningful photo. Good Job. p.s. Thanks for ignoring me in Johnstown today!!

Really nice image and text to go along with it. You're so creative with the filters--I'm too much of a purist to fiddle around with filters, but I often like the effects that you and Steve achieve.
